1989 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at Friendship Baptist Church in Pauline, SC. Also led youth Sunday School and preached there that morning. Thank you, Mark Arrington. This was the first Art to Heart I did after Dad's death the previous week.
2017 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at State Street Baptist Church in Cayce (Columbia), SC. Thank you, Chet Andrews and Bobby Baston. This was the only time we've ever rented a van to do Art to Heart. After decades of traveling in a full-size van pulling a 16-foot trailer, a handful of years ago we put together a much more compact Art to Heart that allowed us to load everything (including full sound and lighting systems) in our 2004 Toyota Sienna. The Sienna developed problems on a trip to Nashville and St. Louis the week before and only made it to Knoxville. We got it home and running, but didn't want to take a chance on not getting to Cayce, so we rented a Penske van to be on the safe side. Two days after this Art to Heart trip, we traded in our 2004 silver Sienna on an almost identical 2005 silver Sienna with significantly lower mileage. (Thank you Taylor Auto Sales and Advantage auto repair). Seven years later we're still going strong with it, but I do sometimes look around for 2006 silver Siennas with significantly lower mileage.
March 6
1983 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading revival services March 6-9 (I think at First Baptist Church) in Cabot, Arkansas. Thank you, Angus Emerson (always thought that was a great name).
This was supposed to be our first stop on our way to a month of doing the first ever Ski 'Fuge in Colorado with me as the camp pastor and Kathy as the worship leader. The third member of the team was a fellowship leader. We would ski every day and lead worship services each night for four weeks of camps. We were the envy of most everyone who had served on Centrifuge up to that point. We had lined up a couple of weeks of programs on the way to Colorado via the northern route and a couple more weeks of programs on way home via the southern route. But before all this happened, we found out we were expecting Christopher in May.(Obviously a far bigger blessing than doing Ski 'Fuge!) Kathy's doctor vetoed Kathy being in Colorado for a month, even if she didn't ski, and I wasn't about to go without her. We bowed out of 'Ski Fuge, filled in that month with programs closer to home, and I went back and covered the return trip without Kathy. (Thank you Don Mattingly for the 'Ski Fuge opportunity.)

1992 - Did Art to Heart as part of our X:SPECTRUM conference for the Florence Baptist Association March 6-7 at Calvary Baptist Church in Florence, SC. Thank you, Steve Branch. The opening we did for X:SPECTRUM was an elaborate spoof of "The Wizard of Oz" and ended with a large iron confetti cannon shooting a big blast of confetti into the crowd. During one of the drama blackouts, one of us (probably me) knocked over the carefully aimed cannon. During the next blackout, I set it back up, but unfortunately didn't get the angle right. At the end of our original theme song "There's No Place Like Home," the cannon went off on cue, and blasted a massive amount of confetti pretty much straight up. I didn't mind too much that months later we were still picking pieces of confetti out of our stage monitors, but I still feel bad that some of it went over and behind our projection screens into the church's grand piano. Again, very sorry about that, Calvary.

Jerry was the first person we told (even before family) that Kathy was pregnant.
1993 - Wed evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services at El Bethel Baptist Church March 7-10 in Greer, SC. Thank you, Greg Sweet.
1996 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at Temple Baptist Church. I have no idea which Temple Baptist Church in which city this was, but I do know that we went there from Charleston where we had been at one of Shari’s dance recitals. Thank you, Keith Prince.
March 11
1980 - Did Art to Heart on the Dove Broadcasting “Nightline” TV show. And it was an experience. It was a special “Taylors First Baptist Church” night with several of us on TFBC staff as guests. Someone decided that in addition to being interviewed about our youth ministry, I should do a chalk drawing on the show. All went well with the drawing part, but when I started dimming the lights for the storm special effects, from watching one of the studio monitors I realized that their TV cameras (probably old in 1980) couldn’t handle the low light special effects. Back then I controlled all the effects manually, so I greatly improvised the effects like never before to create something that looked good for TV. It was actually rather fun, and it must have looked pretty good on home TVs as well. As soon as the presentation was over, all the phones started ringing and the fundraising was in high gear. “Another $50 pledge in honor of the beautiful chalk drawing.” So it wasn’t too surprising that for years afterwards someone would periodically tell me they had seen me do a chalk drawing on TV the night before. That recorded segment lived on for no telling how long. “The lines are now open…”

1993 - Did Art to Heart as part of our X:SPECTRUM conference held at First Baptist Church in Aiken, SC. March 12-13. I think this is the one we had to rush and end early because of snow, which is rare in Aiken in March. Thank you, Gordon Ogle.

1998 - Friday Art to Heartas part of three day ministry at FIrst Baptist Church in Lilburn, GA. March 12-14. Thank you, Greg Sweatt.
2000 - Tuesday evening Art to Heart for Upward basketball banquet at Roebuck Baptist Church in Roebuck, BC. In these 50 years of doing Art to Heart, this was one of only a couple of times that the main part of the special effects didn't work, which is a major deal. I’m somewhat amazed that this has happened only twice since it only takes one of dozens of potential things to go wrong to completely shut down the special effects. In this case, we discovered afterwards that someone had apparently accidentally unplugged a power cord. Thank you, Randy Bates, David Satterwhite, and Tim Williams.
March 15

Mike Blackwood and family did a concert as part of the evening. Mike (and often Kim) used to travel with us a lot helping out with music for Art to Heart and many other Concoxions ministries. Was special to have the whole Blackwood family with us for this evening.
March 18

1983 - Friday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Friday revival services at First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC March 13-18. Thank you, Carl Compton.
1984 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services March 18-21 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. My favorite memory on this date came earlier in the day. After preaching in the Sunday morning service, we were eating lunch at a restaurant and overheard a lady sitting nearby talking about the first service of the revival at her church. Someone asked how it was. She said that "what the preacher had to say was great, but he's not as dynamic as some of the evangelists we've had." From the beginning I have consciously avoided the fire and brimstone shouting stereotype, so I was perfectly fine with that review. While we were leaving the restaurant, she recognized me and her eyes got real big as she realized we were sitting right behind her. For the rest of the week she was the first one after each service to tell me what a great job I had done that night.
1986 - Calendar says "A2H for wife of Larry Hutchins" at Bethany BC. Not sure what this means.

1983 - Art to Heart for Screven Baptist Association youth rally in Summerville, SC. Thank you, Rob Flint.
1985 - Back in these days we personally were not yet using credit cards. We took a limited amount of cash with us to help pay travel expenses, but on longer trips tried to cover a lot of those expenses with money from selling our "Abundantly" music album (and later cassettes) and "The Abundant Life Notebook," a discipleship notebook I wrote. This date was the last day of a six week long trip that included ministry in Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, and back to Tennessee. When we left home we knew that tires on the van needed to be replaced. At a random license check/inspection stop somewhere between Texas and Florida a kind patrolmen told us that the tires were down to the steel belted radials, gave us a warning ticket, and told us to replace them immediately, which we had been planning to do once we sold enough albums and notebooks. We had just enough ($600+) to replace all four tires when we got to Florida. We made it to Tennessee a few weeks later, but when it was time for the trip home we were cashless. We went to a Christian bookstore in Knoxville, where the manager was thankfully very impressed with "The Abundant Life Notebook." He knew nothing of our financial dilemma, but gladly bought enough notebooks for us to eat and get gas for the trip home. Life on the road can be exciting.
1989 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at White Springs Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC. Thank you, Betty Vincent. My calendar noted that Bill Wallace went with us, which he did a lot back in those days. Billy was a college student who served several years on our summer staff. He of course helped with set up and tear down, but what I appreciated even more was that he was great with our two little boys and a good driver that I trusted for relief driving on long late night trips home. Thanks again, Billy. You should make a trip with us again for old times sake.
1995 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Monday through Wednesday "Building Program" revival at Northside Baptist Church March 19-22 in Orangeburg, SC. For "Building Program" the chalk drawing board was built into a set of 2x4 framing and brick veneer that covered the width of the stage and also included a puppet stage. Thank you, Mike Sides.

On our way there to preach that morning, our kids said they thought Four Holes was a funny name for a church and asked why it was called that. I made up a wonderfully elaborate and entertaining story about how it got its name. Thank you, David Dinkins.

1995 - Wednesday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday "Building Program" revival services March 19-22 at Northside Baptist Church in Orangeburg, SC. Thank you, Mike Sides. If I'm remembering correctly, this is where a man in the church who helped us with unloading and setup offered to get us a great deal on unbranded lawn equipment. I was skeptical (actually wondered if he was fencing stolen merchandise) but Mike and others vouched for him. He apparently legitimately worked for a company that tested equipment. I ended up buying a new top of the line "unmarked" Craftsman riding mower for less than a fourth of what Sears was selling it for. It's a great mower. I still have it, but haven't used it in a few years. Probably only needs a minor tuneup. Let me know if you'd like to buy (or fix) an unbranded heavy duty lawn tractor.
1997 - Art to Heart as part of leading a DiscipleNow / X:SPECTRUM conference March 20-22 at Rawlinson Road Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. When I got the invitation, I didn't know there was a Clearwater, SC (near Augusta, GA), so for a long time I thought we were going to Clearwater, FL. Didn't figure it out until pastor asked if we needed a hotel room or planned to commute each day.

March 24
1982 - Did chalk drawing of Christ knocking on door as part of leading "My Heart - Christ's Home" retreat Wednesday through Friday for Chatsworth, GA First Baptist Church March 24-26. I remember this being an incredibly spiritually mature group. One of only times I felt like I might not have been challenging enough.
In all the written correspondence leading up to this retreat, they kept saying things like "We are looking forward to having you and Linda with us." In writing back I would say "Kathy and I are looking forward to being with you," but never just came out and said "my wife's name is Kathy, not Linda." A few days before the retreat we were doing Art to Heart for FCA at Furman and while leading music, I started calling Kathy "Linda." Someone took the bait and asked why I was calling Kathy "Linda." I related the above story about our correspondence and joked that rather than correct anybody in Chatsworth, i was just going to call Kathy "Linda" while we were there, so I was practicing. After the program that night two Furman students came up to us and said they were from Chatsworth First Baptist and for weeks their whole church had been praying for "Bill and Linda" coming to minister there. I assured them that we weren't offended and thought it was rather funny. By the time we got to Chatsworth, the two students had let leadership there know that my wife's name was Kathy, so practicing calling her "Linda" went to waste.
1985 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading two-day ministry March 24-25 at Love Memorial Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC. Preached Sunday morning and did our "One More Chance" 3-screen multi-media production Monday evening. Thank you, Fred Bolt.

Bobby was instrumental in me getting started doing chalk drawings (more details here https://www.concoxions.com/art-to-heart-50th-anniversary) and in being in ministry at all. Was honored to bring the message at Bobby's funeral on this date and lead the congregation in singing "Pass It On" at the conclusion. Without question one of the most influential people in my life, a mentor and best friend. Still miss him.
March 26

This was a new conference that SBC National Youth Evangelism Director Dean Finley enlisted me to put together for the SBC Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board). Also wrote and recorded an original theme song for the conference called "Has It Dawned On You?" Dean was a great friend who passed away this past August.

March 30
1976 - Calendar just said "Chalk drawing at Eastside." I'm pretty sure this was at Eastside High School in Taylors, SC during the school day instead of an Eastside church at night, because calendar also said I went to an Andrea Crouch & Disciples concert that night at Greenville Memorial Auditorium.
1980 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at First Baptist Church in Franklinton, NC. Thank you, Ralph Jett. 2012 - Did not one but two things we'd never done before or since on Easter Sunday morning at LifeSong Church in Lyman, SC. We've done Art to Heart for two back-to-back services a few times, but on this day we did four presentations of our "Crossroads" chalk drawing with very little turn around time to switch out the drawing boards in between. But if that wasn't unique enough, instead of drawing to our usual recorded music soundtrack, the first four songs of each presentation were performed live by LifeSong's praise band before switching to our recording for the special effects ending. The coordination between drawing and music is rather critical, so I wouldn't have been too excited about just any praise team taking on this challenge. Fortunately this wasn't just any old praise team. The worship leader at LifeSong at the time was none other than Mike Blackwood, who has been a part of more Art to Heart productions than anyone not named Cox. For more than three decades, Mike has been a huge part of anything musical and then some for Concoxions. If all that mutual experience and trust wasn't enough, Mike was assisted at LifeSong at the time by Robin Hunt, another incredibly talented Seesalt staffer who was less than two months away from becoming our son-in-law. They did a great job of pretty much matching the original soundtracks and we all put in the rehearsal time to make sure everything synced up right. Long-time Concoxions technical coordinator guru Ray Jackson was also on hand to make sure all production elements went well. This was 12 years ago, and we're still getting great comments from people who were at one (or more) of those four Easter Sunday morning services. Thank you, Pastor Jeff Hickman for allowing us to be a part of this special Easter ministry, and thank you Mike, Robin, Ray, band members, vocalists, tech team, and all who helped it happen.
