1976 - Art to Heart for Furman University's FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Have done Art to Heart a lot over the years for Furman's FCA, usually in the student center amphitheater or lounge. This one was at the home of John West. John was the athletic director and FCA sponsor at Furman, a great friend, and an incredible partner in our college ministry at Taylors First Baptist Church when I served there. He and Charlotte amazingly hosted maybe 150-200 college students in their home every week for FCA meetings. Probably only time we've ever done Art to Heart in someone's house.

1982 - One of many Art to Heart presentations for BSU (Baptist Student Union) at Winthrop College/University in Rock Hill, SC. Thank you again, Bob Porterfield and Dena Lucy.

1984 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Thursday revival services April 1-5 at Woodburn Baptist Church in Bowling Green, KY.

1988 - Friday evening Art to Heart at Westside Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC. Thank you, Frank Keels.

1990 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday "Here's Hope" revival services April 1-4 at Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC. Thank you, Ed Carney.

1975 - Maybe the most life altering Art to Heart I've ever done. As our senior year at Furman was wrapping up, good friend Mike Catlett, who was working part-time at Taylors First Baptist Church with the junior high, told me that I was going to be invited to do the program for the TFBC Wednesday night senior high youth meeting. He suggested that I do a chalk drawing, and then off the record added that if everything went well they were going to offer me the interim senior high youth ministry job for the summer. I attended Taylors First Baptist Church while at Furman and knew it was a great church. I had even told people that my dream job was to be the youth minister at a church like First Baptist Spartanburg (my home church) or Taylors First Baptist Church. The dream was for that to happen after seminary and gaining experience somewhere else first. As exciting as this possibility was, I questioned whether or not I should do a chalk drawing. I told Mike I didn't want to give the impression that I could do a chalk drawing every Wednesday night. He understood but still encouraged me to do Art to Heart (wasn't calling it that back then). I honestly don't remember much about that night, but it must have gone OK. Minister of Education Phil Hargrove was there for my "audition" and invited me to come back for an interview. Along with Phil and Pastor Ernest Carswell soon became two of the best bosses I could have asked for. The summer turned into five incredible years and helped prepare me for everything that has followed. Oh, and also present that night was a wonderful young lady named Kathy Williams. She's been present for quite a few Art to Heart presentations since then.

1986 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at Temple Baptist Church in Abbeville, SC. Thank you, Scott McClellan. Scott also holds a special place in our Art to Heart history. When I pulled the notorious all-nighter putting everything together for our first "emergency" Kentucky mission trip chalk drawing, Scott helped me record our first ever chalk drawing soundtrack. I played guitar and Scott thankfully joined me on vocals since he is a far better singer than me.

1989 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at First Baptist Church in Ridgeland, SC. Also preached there that morning. Thank you, David Newton and Ward Carver.

April 3

1977 - Art to Heart for "College Lunch" at Taylors First Baptist Church in Taylors, SC. When I was minister of youth at TFBC my responsibilities included college ministry. A big part of that ministry was "College Lunch." Every Sunday after the worship service we served dinner to usually 200-350 college students mainly from Furman University followed by a program. During my five years of heading up College Lunch (along with Furman Athletic Director John West) I remember a lot of great speakers, musicians, and other programs. But I have no recollection of me doing this chalk drawing. I sure hope others found it more memorable.

April 4

1982 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services April 4-7 at Enoree Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, SC. Music was led for the week by Tony Beam, who also played (I think) trumpet. No (literal) walls fell. Thank you, John Dill and Steve Crouse.

1990 - Wednesday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday "Here's Hope" revival services April 1-4 at Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC. Thank you, Ed Carney. I first met Ed and we became good friends when we roomed together the first year I was on staff for the "South Carolina Baptist (summer) State Youth Conference," that would later become a big part of my life for many years. Shortly after this revival, after the retirement of Jack Ellenburg, I recommended Ed to the pastor search committee at Riverland Hills Baptist Church where we were members. He was called and I looked forward to having him as my pastor. By the time he started, we had made the decision to move to Spartanburg. We missed the first couple of months of his pastorate because of directing the conference where we first met and other ministry engagements. We finally got to attend RHBC for one Sunday near the end of the summer before moving. It was good to have Ed as our pastor for a morning.

April 5

1975 - Did Art to Heart as part of leading youth retreat April 4-6 at Springmaid Beach in Myrtle Beach for Kilbourne Park Baptist Church of Columbia, SC.

1981 - Did Art to Heart at 8:30 am and 11:00 am Sunday services as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services April 5-8 at First Baptist Church in Lugoff, SC. One of my best memories of this week was going back to pastor David Robinson's house each night after the service for "snacks." One night the snacks were the hottest wings I've ever eaten. I remember sitting in his den and laughing at each other because of how bad we each were sweating. Thank you, Dave. You are missed.

1980 - Our first Art to Heart after "Bill Cox Abundant Life Ministries" (now dba Concoxions) became our full-time ministry was for the Easter Sunday night service at Taylors First Baptist Church in Taylors, SC. My last day as minister of youth at TFBC was six days earlier. Thank you, Ernest Carswell, Phil Hargrove, Lindsay O'Rear and so many others at TFBC for more than I can say.

1984 - Thursday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Thursday revival services April 1-5 at Woodburn Baptist Church in Bowling Green, KY.

1987 - Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading weekend ministry April 3-5 at Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Old Hickory (Nashville area), TN. Thank you, Ken Clayton.

1997 - Did Art to Heart as part of Concoxions' BeachBall spring conference April 4- 6 at Chapel by the Sea in Garden City, SC. Music was led by Mike and Kim Blackwood. Thank you to David Welch, then Chapel by the Sea Director, for doing so much to make BeachBall possible. We did BeachBall and BeachBall in the Fall at Garden City for a couple of years until we started doing Seesalt summer student conferences in Myrtle Beach in 1998. Thought it might be too much to do spring, summer, and fall student conferences all in Myrtle Beach.

April 6

1985 - Did Art to Heart for a youth rally in Newton, NC.

1986 - Did Art to Heart for one night of Good News America revival at Bounty Land Baptist Church in Seneca, SC. Thank you, Bill Ellison.

April 7

2001 - Did program for an associational youth rally at Long Branch Baptist Church. Probably did Art to Heart but not sure. Also not sure which association or which Long Branch Baptist Church. There are four in South Carolina alone.

2024 - Art to Heart at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, NC for Neighborhood Church. Pastor is long-time great friend Landon Horton, who served on our staff for four summers during seminary from 1989-92. Added four new hex lights into the stage lighting.

April 8

1977 - While serving as minister of you at Taylors First Baptist Church, possibly did a chalk drawing for TFBC senior high retreat April 7-9 at Awanita Valley near Marietta, SC.

1986 - Art to Heart for Good News American Youth Rally at St. Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Thank you, Jim Cashwell.

1990 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at New Hope Baptist Church in Pelion, SC. Thank you, Sheilah Sturkey.

1993 - Did Art to Heart as part of leading the program for the Pennsylvania / South Jersey Baptist State Youth Rally April 9-10 in Harrisburg, PA. Thank you, Dave Waltz.

2022 - Palm Sunday morning Art to Heart at Gap Creek Baptist Church in Marietta, SC. We set up the day before and hiked to a waterfall on the church's property. I don't think we've ever done another Art to Heart for a church that had it's own rather decent waterfall. Thank you, Barry Ellis. Barry was in our youth group at Taylors First Baptist Church when I served there and was a great guy even back then. He's a very talented guitarist and singer and while in college sometimes traveled with us to help out with music. Barry even wrote one of the songs on our album "Abundantly • Bill & Kathy Cox." We were looking forward to reuniting for a song together on this date, but sadly it didn't happen. I guess we were too busy hiking to the church waterfall.

April 11

1985 - Did Art to Heart at O'Leno State Park in High Springs, FL as part of leading youth retreat April 9-12 for First Baptist Church of Melbourne FL. Thank you, Robin Thomas.

1986 - Did Art to Heart as part of "Good News America" Lower State for four churches at Steifletown Baptist Church in Aiken, SC. Thank you, Robert Boone.

1993 - This was an Easter to remember and one of the more unusual situations in which we've done Art to Heart. When the pastor of First Baptist Church in Wrightstown, NJ called me, he explained that the church's main ministry had long been with transient trainees at nearby military bases. Because of recent base closings, he said the church was barely hanging on. He thought the best chance for survival was to do something on Easter Sunday morning that would attract a lot of civilians in the community as the first step toward refocusing the church in a new direction. I don't even remember how he knew about Art to Heart, but he asked if there was any chance we could come to New Jersey for that Easter Sunday morning service. Especially considering those challenges, we said yes, having no idea what to expect. We made the long drive with our three kids (then 4-10 years old), set up the day before, and spend the night in the pastor's basement. It was definitely different, but Christopher, Taylor, and Shari were still excited when we got in our van to go to church and their Easter baskets were there waiting for them. The barely surviving church obviously did an incredible job of promotion (I think they distributed 10,000 flyers) and packed out not one, but two very exciting services with enthusiastic response to Art to Heart. We packed up quickly for the long trip home since the kids had to be back in school the next morning. Our traditional Easter egg hunts were replaced with improvised Easter-themed highway games in which they had to hunt and find a variety of things. This is probably another good time to say how fortunate we are to have such incredible kids. From birth into adulthood, our kids have usually willingly and often joyfully put up with a lot for our various ministries to be possible. Thank you, Christopher, Taylor, and Shari. I hope you know how much your mom and I love and appreciate you.

I got reports for a while that the church was again growing and doing well in the weeks and months after Easter. But in writing this I began to wonder what had happened to First Baptist in Wrightsville over the past 31 years. I started Googling with the hope of being able to add a happy postscript here. Unfortunately, I found very little about First Baptist Church in Wrightsville, NJ. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but was disappointed that its website link is no longer working. At the very least, they made it to the days of websites.

April 12

1981 - We were somewhere in Pensacola, FL doing some kind of ministry Sunday through Tuesday April 12-14. I don't know for sure where we were, but it probably included Art to Heart.

1986 - Did Art to Heart for associational youth rally at First Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Music by recording artist Linda Dove. Thank you, Gay Carpenter.

1987 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at City View Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. Thank you, Curtis Waters.

1997 - Saturday evening Art to Heart at Saluda Baptist Association youth rally.

2006 - Art to Heart for "Crossfire" student meeting in the Hangar at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC. Thank you, Seth Buckley. Afterwards did Art to Heart again for "Connect" college and young singles meeting.

April 13

1976 - May have done Art to Heart for Taylors First Baptist Church senior high beach retreat "Strategic Withdrawal." Thinking back to this time, I remember that "Strategic Withdrawal" had a double meaning. It's another way of saying "retreat," but adding this spring beach retreat into the senior high ministry was part of my strategy to withdraw from doing TFBC's traditional senior high summer beach retreat and doing a summer senior high beach mission trip that summer instead. Kathy and I were not dating at this point and she and her mom were both chaperones on this trip. I have vivid memories of her driving the Williams' family station wagon to the beach and back sandwiched in "the rocking chair" in between Phil Hargrove's lead bus and me driving bus number 2. Phil could be challenging to keep us with, and I was really impressed with Kathy's driving ability. I still am.

1986 - Sunday morning Art to Heart at Friendship Church in Lugoff, SC as part of "Good News America" Lower State. Thank you, Ed Stokes. Was supposed to do Art to Heart again that night at Crosswell Baptist Church in Sumter, SC, but it got postponed til a later date.

1988 - Wednesday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services April 10-13 at Northgate Baptist Church in Orangeburg, SC.

1991 - Did Art to Heart as part of our X:SPECTRUM conference April 12-14 for a group of churches in Gatlinburg, TN. Thank you, Steve Crouse.

April 14

1985 -Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services April 14-17 at Prays Mill Baptist Church in Douglasville, GA. The brand new youth minister there was Bruce Causey. Bruce was on our Centrifuge youth camp staff in 1983 and was incredibly encouraging to me in my role as Camp Pastor. Throughout the summer, he had some specific (not just "good job!") encouraging comment after almost every service. He even noticed and complimented minor changes from week to week. (He actually listened!) He loved the chalk drawings and three screen multi-media presentations I was doing that summer and said often that as soon as he got hired by a church, he was bringing me in to do that wherever he was. And sure enough, as soon as he graduated seminary and went to Prays Mill, that's exactly what he did. Thanks, Bruce.

1995 - Did Art to Heart as part of planning and leading Sonrise youth conference along with Dean Finley for the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) at Ridgecrest Conference Center April 13-15.

2013 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at Race Path Baptist Church in Elleboro, NC. Also preached there that morning. Thank you, Randall Cooper.

1990 - Easter Sunday Art to Heart at Georges Creek Baptist Church in Easley, SC. Thank you, Kenneth Newton.

April 16

1981 - Led program for Charleston Baptist Association youth retreat April 16- 18 at Bonnie Done Plantation. Probably did Art to Heart but not sure which day. I think this was the time that Kathy and I were housed all alone in the huge old plantation mansion while the rest of the retreat attenders were in group housing out back. It was somewhat creepy, but we were mainly concerned about what outsiders might wander into the totally unlocked mansion. We put a dresser in front of our bedroom door.

1982 - Did chalk drawing of Christ knocking at a door as part of leading youth retreat for Pendleton United Methodist Church April 16-18 at Awanita Valley camp near Marietta, SC. Theme for the retreat was "My Heart - Christ's Home" based on the little book with that title by Robert Boyd Munger. Used that theme and chalk drawing quite often for many years. Thank you, Hal Dunlap and Steve Pearson.

1988 - Did Art to Heart as part of leading youth retreat for First Baptist Church of Franklin TN April 15-17 at Grand Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, TN. Theme was "Walk the Talk." Thank you, Alan Pace. Would later do several weeks of summer conferences here as well as the first seven years of Chillipepper from 1996-2002. Would also later do Art to Heart multiple times at First Baptist Franklin (later called Peoples Church) at the invitation of several different youth pastors.

2017 - Easter Sunday morning Art to Heart at The Well in Landrum, SC. I'm always impressed and appreciative when a pastor humbly gives up preaching time on probably the most attended Sunday of the year in order to do something special. Thank you, Brannon Poore and Hambone Camp.

April 17

1983 - Sunday evening Art to Heart - but I don't know where.

April 19

1987 - Did Art to Heart for Sunday service (don't remember if this one was morning or evening) at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. This was our home church at the time. Thank you, Jack Ellenburg.

1997 - Did Art to Heart and three-screen nine-projector multi-image production as part of leading DiscipleNow April 17-20 at Franklin First Baptist Church (aka People's Church) in Franklin, TN. Random fun memory: Michael Peterson had been a program guest with us several times when I was directing a youth conference called "Evangelympics" for the SC Baptist Convention. Michael is a multi-talented guy who at the time did feats of strength, was a contemporary Christian recording artist, and an excellent communicator. We spent a fair amount of time together, had some deep conversations on a few cross-state drives, and became good friends. Michael lived in Franklin and came over to the church to help us load the trailer at the end of the weekend. More importantly we discussed his upcoming shift into country music and we listened to his just recorded and soon-to-be-released country album. I was not the only one who thought it sounded great. That first country album produced five Top 40 hits on Billboards Hot Country charts including the number one hit "From Here to Eternity." A number of awards, other hits, and a successful career followed. And I became a limited country music fan.

April 20

1988 - Was honored to do both Art to Heart and our "Homecoming" three-screen, nine-projector multi-image production at National Youth Ministry Conference 3 in Nashville, TN. The conference was April 18-21 and I'm not sure on which days I did which presentations.

April 21

2014 - Art to Heart for associational senior adult meeting at First Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. Thank you, Jamie Burdette. This was our initial time to use our new lighter weight triangular truss as a first step toward building our current more compact set up.

2024 - Sunday evening Art to Heart at Davidson Street Baptist Church in Clinton, SC as part of their spring revival. Thank you, Kenny Moore. Over the years I have drawn on various materials. The progression has been rolls of paper table cloths on a cardboard board (first ones in Kentucky), gray bogus paper on plywood board (the standard for most chalk artists), rolls of news print paper on clear plexiglass, and cotton bed sheets stretched on wooden frame. This was first time to draw on canvas (canvas drop cloth) stretched on wood frame. Looked good but ate up more chalk and created more chalk dust. Verdict still out on where we go from here.

April 22

1977 - Did Art to Heart as part of leading youth conference April 22-24 in Blythewood, SC.

1989 - Did Art to Heart on Saturday as part of the Maryland - Delaware Bapt Convention State Youth Conference April 21-22 at the Ocean City MD convention center. Also did our "Homecoming" three-screen, nine-projector multi-image production Friday evening. Thank you, Katie Grogan.

April 24

1983 - This was a landmark service that significantly changed Art to Heart. Did Sunday evening Art to Heart as part of leading Sunday through Wednesday revival services April 24-27 at Union Grove Baptist Church in Kernersville, NC. A church member there worked at a large electric supply place in Winston-Salem and was intrigued by our chalk drawing board lighting. At the time I was using a combination of white and black light bulbs connected to dimmers. I told him that I'd rather use fluorescent tubes, but needed to be able to dim them. He said it was possible with specialized fluorescent light rheostats and dimmers. At his encouragement, he and I went to his company in Winston-Salem that night after the service and brought back various black light tubes with which to experiment, which we did late into the night. The tubes were far more effective than the bulbs I had been using. He offered, even insisted, on building a new lighting system for me using parts you didn't find just anywhere. It took a few months to get the finished product, but it revolutionized especially our ultraviolet effects. We used the custom-built dimmers and fixtures for over 30 years before I made the switch to some early LEDs. Unfortunately the black light UV LEDs weren't nearly as effective as the fluorescent UV tubes. After using the LEDs for a while, I went back to the tubes. LED technology continued to improve and several years ago for our overhead board lighting I decided to try two LED hex light bars which produce any combination of red, green, blue, amber, white, and UV light and do smooth 0-100% dimming. They work incredibly well and even the UV is better than ever. Thank you, Ty Talton for inviting us to do this revival and for connecting us to a great guy that helped us achieve more than 30 years of great fluorescent lighting,

1992 - Did Art to Heart as part of our X:SPECTRUM conference April 24-25 at Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, SC. Thank you, Seth Buckley. Have known Seth pretty much since he started in ministry and, sorry Summerville friends, had a little something to do with him coming to Spartanburg about the time our older son was moving up into the youth group at our church. Because I love our kids. And Seth.
