In June of 1974 Bill Cox was on a youth mission trip in Bell County, Kentucky with Spartanburg First Baptist Church where he was serving as assistant youth minister under Bobby Haley. Halfway through the week, they got word that, due to a death in his family, First Baptist minister of education George Schrieffer was not going to be able to join them to do chalk drawings at each of the churches they were serving. Concerned that the kids were going to be disappointed, Bill convinced Bobby to let him fill in for George, in spite of the fact that Bill had never done a chalk drawing in his life. After an all-night preparation marathon, Bill did chalk drawings at 10 different churches over the next two days and, as they say, the rest is history.

On June 23 there will be a one-of-a-kind celebration of that 50-year history that has seen Bill do many hundreds of chalk drawings, now known as “Art to Heart,” all across the country and beyond. The celebration begins at 5:00 pm in The Hangar auditorium at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC and will include music, dramatic monologues, and a special effects chalk drawing.

Special honored guests will include family members of George Schrieffer, Bobby Haley, and former FBC minister of music Ronald Wells, who also played a large role in the development of Art to Heart..

Everyone is invited. You are welcome to bring groups of all ages.
